Area 51 (Arcade) Gameplay |
Emulated using MAME. Released in 1995 by Atari Games. I found it interesting that this game was built from a modified Atari Jaguar. The chipset was called CoJag and featured an improved processor which handled both the sound and graphics, more RAM, and a hard drive. The game was stored on a 1 gigabyte hard disk drive that stored the pre-rendered video and the game's graphics are mostly digitized effects placed in front of the video. The controller is a light-gun in the actual arcade but using the mouse is just as accurate if not superior. It is fun but impossible to beat without a continue because the game is designed to take your money, if you start doing good it counts another hit. Even today it stands out in any arcade with its unique experience. A sister game exists called Maximum Force (1997) which uses the same hardware and there is also a sequel titled Area 51: Site 4 (1998).
