AWESOME EARTH INSIGHTS! 10 FASCINATING FACTS about our PLANET EARTH! 10. COSMIC DUST The universe is a pretty dusty place -- each day our planet is sprinkled with about 100 tons of interstellar dust particles... As such, we're never far from cosmic dust -- it's everywhere; on our streets, in our homes, even on our clothes! 9. CROWDED CORAL Coral reefs are the most species intensive ecosystems on the planet --supporting more varied life per unit area than an Amazon rainforest... Occupying less than 0.1 percent of the Earth's ocean surface, coral provides a home for around 25 percent of all marine species. 8. DEADLY LAKES In the west of Central Africa are located 3 deep and deadly lakes... These crater lakes -- Nyos, Monoun and Kivu -- sit atop pockets of volcanic magma. In 1986 an enormous cloud of carbon dioxide was expelled from Lake Nyos suffocating 1,700 people. 7. DEEPEST DITCH Located in the Western Pacific ocean at a known depth of 35,813 feet (10,916 meters), the Mariana Trench is the deepest point on the ocean floor... On the 26th of March 2012 Canadian film director James Cameron became the third person ever to reach the bottom of the Mariana Trench. 6. OCEANS OF GOLD How many tons of gold do the world's oceans hold? Answer: about 20 million! That's about 9 pounds per person. But we can't get too excited as it's nearly impossible to mine and or it's so thinly diluted -- there's roughly 13 billionths of a gram of gold in every liter of seawater. 5. SUPER DRY The Atacama Desert of Chile and Peru is so dry that there are places near its center where rainfall has never been recorded... While it is thought to be the oldest desert on Earth its arid soil and appearance has been compared to that of Mars -- which has led to visits from film producers and scientific testing by NASA. 4. GIGANTIC ERUPTION Mount Tambora, Sumbawa, Indonesia is the site of the largest volcanic eruption ever recorded... Ranking a "Super-Colossal" 7 on the Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI), the eruption -- which was heard thousands of kilometers away -- killed at least 70,000 people and resulted in a "volcanic winter". 3. LARGEST LIVING THING Comically named the "Humongous Fungus", a particularly massive single specimen of Armillaria solidipes was found in Malheur National Forest, Oregon... Growing -- mostly underground -- for an estimated 2,400 years, this Armillaria solidipes of Oregon covers 3.4 square miles (the "honey mushrooms" are the only visible evidence of the giant organism living beneath). 2. TALLEST MOUNTAIN Is the tallest mountain in the world Mount Everest or Mauna Kea in Hawaii? Everest is of course higher above sea level. However, when Mauna Kea is measured from its true "organic" base -- which is below sea level -- to its summit, it stands at 10,100 m (33,100 ft) -- that's more than twice Everest's base-to-peak height. 1. THE GREAT UNKNOWN Ocean covers 71 percent of the Earth's surface, yet 95 percent of ocean waters and 99 percent of the ocean floor are unexplored... With the little we already know, our -- vastly under-explored -- oceans play such a vital role in sustaining life on Earth... Hopefully in the future we can unlock more of the mysterious of the deep and better understand this massive watery region of our planet. ***THE MUSIC*** -- Called "Feather" -- was composed by PETER MCISAAC MUSIC: http://www.premiumbeat.com/royalty_free_music/songs/feather
